The Connector: Edition 105

Oct 10th, 2024 | The Connector

RED OCTOBER wrapped up last night, and even though the results didn’t swing our way, The Fightin' Phils gave us a fantastic season to cheer for. And guess what? We've got a few Mets fans in our midst... talk about an interesting mix!

But that’s the beauty of sports—it brings us together, even when we’re on opposite sides of the rivalry. Whether it’s cheering, jeering, or friendly competition, sports can unite our team, spark conversation, and build camaraderie across the board. Here's to more excitement and teamwork, both on and off the field!

1. The 10-minute rule

Imagine facing a challenging problem at work. Despite sitting at your desk for the past ten minutes, your mind is still drawing a blank. If you were Steve Jobs, the solution would be simple: take a walk.

According to Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson, "Taking a long walk was his preferred way to have a serious conversation." Legendary designer Jony Ive recalled, "So much of our time together was spent quietly walking." Whether barefoot or padded in socks, Jobs often roamed, not just for the love of the outdoors, but because he intuited what neuroscience now proves — walking helps your brain function better, enabling you to solve problems that stumped you while sitting.

That's why some neuroscientists recommend following Jobs' 10-minute rule: if you haven't cracked a tough mental challenge after ten minutes, stand up and take a walk. Read the full article here!

2. Embrace your authentic self

It’s your first day of school, and your parents say, “Have fun and be yourself.” Easy, right? But your mind races with thoughts like, “What if they don’t like me?” or “Maybe I should just blend in.”

Believe it or not, your parents were right. Not being true to yourself is a huge disservice. When you're authentic, you form deeper connections with people who embrace you for who you are.

So why are we afraid to let our personalities shine? Often, it's fear of rejection. But if you’re rejected for being yourself, that situation simply wasn’t the right fit. Read the full article here!
