The Connector: Edition 117

Apr 23rd, 2025 | The Connector

At TOC, we believe small actions can lead to big changes for our people, our workplaces, and our planet.

In celebration of Earth Day, our Culture Club surprised our team with botanical seed paper! This plantable paper is a biodegradable eco-paper made from recycled materials and embedded with seeds. (No trees were harmed in the making!) 🌸

Once planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper composts away, leaving behind herbs, flowers, or veggies…and no waste. 🌿

Let’s continue to work together toward a greener, more sustainable future—at work and beyond.

1. Is Your Small Business Truly Prepared for AI Adoption? This Company's Journey Shows Why Preparation Is Key.

AI emerged from the labs in 2022, and in just a few years, it has made significant strides. Experts predict that AI will soon impact everything from healthcare to creativity, ushering in an era of transformation like never before.

For businesses, adopting AI is becoming essential to stay competitive. But how do you get started? This case study shares an experience implementing AI in a small business to boost its value and position it for sale. Read the full article here

2. Is the AI effect strengthening or diminishing critical thinking skills?

LinkedIn’s recent "Skills on the Rise" report reveals an increasing demand for skills like adaptability, communication, and critical thinking, with AI literacy leading the charge. However, as AI tools become more embedded in the workplace, some experts are concerned that these technologies might diminish critical thinking abilities.

Earlier this year, Microsoft researchers surveyed 319 knowledge workers who use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot weekly to explore their impact on critical thinking. By analyzing 936 real-world examples, they discovered that workers primarily rely on critical thinking to ensure quality—often cross-checking AI outputs with external sources.

While generative AI improves efficiency, the researchers found that it may limit deep critical engagement, potentially leading to long-term overreliance and a weakening of independent problem-solving skills. Interestingly, the role of critical thinking shifts: from gathering information to verifying it, from solving problems to integrating AI responses, and from executing tasks to overseeing them. 3. Test your I-9 Knowledge

How well do you understand I-9 compliance?

Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, all U.S. employers—regardless of company size—are required to complete Form I-9 for every new hire to verify their eligibility to work in the United States. In certain cases, employers may also need to reverify employment eligibility.

From revolutionizing recruiting and benefits management to performance evaluations, AI is transforming HR processes. But with these advancements come ethical concerns, including bias, transparency, and privacy issues.
