The Connector: Edition 144

Jun 12th, 2026 | The Connector

As we settle into summer, many organizations are taking a closer look at the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of work. In this month's Connector, we're exploring why better workforce data is becoming essential as AI continues to transform the workplace, and what HR leaders need to know to make smarter, more informed decisions. We're also examining the ongoing impact of turnover in the life sciences sector and why retaining critical talent remains a top priority for business leaders.

You'll also find the latest episode of HR After Dark, where we dive into timely workplace topics and practical leadership insights. And if you're looking to connect your brand with CEOs, founders, and executive decision-makers, sponsorship opportunities are now available for The O'Connor Group's Executive Summit: What's Keeping CEOs Up at Night this November. We hope you'll take a few moments to explore this month's insights and join the conversation.

Why HR Needs Better Data in the AI Era

The workforce is evolving faster than ever, yet many organizations are still making critical talent and AI decisions based on outdated data. Traditional tools like surveys, HRIS records, and manager observations often capture perceptions of work, not how work actually gets done.

As AI reshapes roles and workflows, HR leaders need greater visibility into real work patterns. Behavioral work data, such as how employees spend time, collaborate, focus, and use technology, can provide valuable insights into productivity, capacity, and opportunities for AI adoption.

To successfully navigate workforce transformation, organizations should:

  • Measure outcomes, not assumptions.
  • Understand how work flows before redesigning roles or teams.
  • Focus on employee experience alongside efficiency.
  • Recognize that AI readiness varies across individuals and functions.
  • Build trust through transparency about how workforce data is collected and used.

The organizations that will thrive in the human + AI era won't simply be the most technologically advanced. They'll be the ones that ask better questions, measure what matters, and use data to make informed, people-centered decisions.

Turnover isn't just a Staffing Issue. It's a Business Risk.

Here's a number worth sitting with: voluntary turnover in life sciences hit 18–22% in key technical functions, and it hasn't fully recovered.

For a 100-person biotech, that's 20+ people walking out every year. Each one carries institutional knowledge, client relationships, and in some cases, regulatory history that can take years to reconstruct.

The real cost isn't just the open headcount. It's the:
- Delayed trials when a Clinical lead exits mid-study
- Regulatory setbacks when institutional memory walks out the door
- Cost-per-hire that balloons to $28,000–$45,000 for director-level replacements

At TOC, we help Life Sciences companies get ahead of turnover, not just react to it. From identifying flight risks through HR consulting to building retention programs that actually work, we partner with you before the exit interview.

Let's talk retention strategy

HR After Dark- Episode 29: Building Loyal Teams in Hospitality

Meridith Coyle has been doing what everyone else has just started talking about... for 33 years.

In Episode 29 of HR After Dark, Meghan Popoleo sits down with Meridith Coyle, the founder of ANEU Kitchens, for a wide-ranging conversation about building a mission-driven food business from the ground up, what it really takes to retain employees for 20-plus years, and why she believes hospitality belongs in medicine.

From losing her father and pivoting out of grad school, to franchising research, a commissary build-out, and locations from Bryn Mawr to the Jersey Shore,  Meridith is growing fast and doing it on her own terms.

She also gets real about reactive leadership, learning to pause, and why "grow or die" has been her business philosophy from day one. If you lead a team, care about employee wellness, or just want to hear from someone who figured out the culture piece before it was a buzzword, this one's for you.

Let's Get Local

As a Home of the Sparrow Board supporter,  we encourage you to attend their Walk for Women event on Saturday, June 20th from 9:00–11:00 AM in the Great Valley Corporate Park.

It features free coffee, soft pretzels, water ice, face painting, balloon animals, fairy hair, a live DJ, and a symbolic 1-mile walk to learn why single women and mothers in Chester County, despite working fulltime, are struggling to remain stably housed. Most importantly, hear from one of their program participants and learn how Home of the Sparrow helped her.

The $30 registration fee (or $10 for children) includes an event T-shirt and all the activities mentioned above.

Register to attend to support women who are working hard to achieve financial and housing independence! Thank you!

Wellness Wednesday

As summer begins and we spend more time in the sun, it's a great reminder to prioritize preventive healthcare. Annual skin checks can help detect potential concerns early, provide peace of mind, and offer personalized recommendations for protecting your skin health.

Whether it's a dermatologist appointment, annual physical, dental cleaning, or eye exam, take a few minutes this week to schedule a preventive checkup you've been putting off. Your future self will thank you.
